Do I Qualify for the GST/HST Credit?

  • GST, HST, credit, tax

As Canadians we are all acquainted with the federal Good and Services Tax (GST).  With some very limited exceptions, almost all of us pay it.  If you reside in an HST-participating province, you may be paying the 5{cae2521f64dcff784c511b644c6cc8c98f9594c79acdd41ba953a724385391e5} GST as part of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).  To help offset the cost some of us pay, the federal government established the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) Credit.

The GST/HST Credit aims to recover all or a portion of the GST/HST you paid in the previous tax year.  The credit is paid out quarterly each year – in July, October, January and April.   These payments are not taxable and you do not need to report them as income on your income tax return.

GST, HST, credit, tax

The GST/HST Credit aims to recover all or a portion of the GST/HST you paid in the previous tax year.

In order to qualify for the GST/HST Credit you must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes.  In addition, at least one

of the following must apply:

  • You are 19 years or older one month before a quarterly GST/HST payment is issued;
  • You are (or were previously) married or in a common-law relationship;
  • You have (or previously had) children who live (or previously lived) with you.

Even though most Canadians pay GST/HST, not everyone who meets the conditions is eligible.  This is because the credit is subject to income restrictions.  The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will automatically determine if you are eligible and calculate your credit amount.  Payments are based on your marital status, family structure and income.

To receive the benefit, you are required to file a tax return even if you do not have any income.
